What is a Hot Runner System?
 
It is a system to mould plastic components without the use of runners and sprue bushes. In essence, the plastic material flows in a hot melt condition directly from the machine nozzle into the mould
What does it do?
  Hot Runner Systems are broadly designed to achieve the following objectives:
 
  • Eliminate the use of runners and sprue which in the case of engineering plastics are generally discarded and result in scrap.
  • Improvement in the cycle time of the mould, by reducing the time needed to fill the mould.
  • Moulded products are generally stress free and do not have weakness in the weld lines.
  • The temperature of the moulding cycle can be controlled more effectively.
  • Reduction in power consumption as the booster pump needs less time to fill the mould.
  • Moulded product weight can be controlled to very high tolerances. This is particularly important in the case of critical components like connectors or automotive press fit parts.
Types of Hot Runners
 
  • Internally insulated type i.e. where the raw material flows around the heaters and into the nozzles which again have heaters in the middle.
  • Single Cavity hot sprue bush, where the sprue bush acts as a direct injection into the part.
  • Manifold Type where the runner channels are externally heated i.e. along side and generally the manifold is machined out of high quality steel and the heater and other channels are gun drilled.
  • Valve Gate Type, where the gate of the nozzle is activated by a valve working on the machines hydraulic systems.
